Not only that, but others, for whom certain of His parables contained stern rebuke, would be so angered by straight speaking that they would attempt to silence Him by violence. ![]() He desired to stimulate their deepest thought and contemplation, and He knew that if He spoke too literally, certain of His hearers would quickly forget His words. Jesus recognized the value of parables in teaching the people. Whatever form the parable took, it was only a vehicle for the moral lesson being taught. The Random House College Dictionary describes a parable as “a short, allegorical story designed to convey a truth or moral lesson.” Cruden’s Complete Concordance further expands this concept, saying that parables in the Bible were used “more generally than elsewhere.” We know that the Bible writers used situations both imaginary-as in the trees asking the bramble to be king over them (Judges 9:8-15)-and realistic in parables. Perhaps then we will better understand what lessons there are for us in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. To begin this study, we’ll take a closer look at just what a parable really is, and then examine the setting in which Jesus told this story. Religious “conversions” resulting from a fear of hell as it is depicted in this passage have indeed occurred, but are based on a foundation sorely in need of the strength that comes only from a genuine appreciation of God’s character and a proper understanding of Scripture. Unfortunately, many modern religious teachers have isolated the story from its original context and used it as a device for scaring people. Others, citing numerous passages of Scripture that seem to contradict the portrayal of heaven and hell contained in this passage, feel that Jesus was teaching an altogether different kind of lesson. Some Christians feel that in this story, Jesus was offering His hearers a glimpse of what existence in the afterlife is like. One of the 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, secretly went to the Pharisees and asked: ‘How much will you pay me if I help you to find Jesus?’ They agreed to pay 30 pieces of silver, and Judas began to look for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to the Pharisees. The Rich Man and Lazarus Much argument has taken place over whether the words of Jesus in Luke 16:19-31 were intended to be understood literally or as a parable. From then on, the Pharisees wanted to kill both Lazarus and Jesus. I know that you always hear me, but I speak aloud so that these people may know that you sent me.’ Then he called out in a loud voice: “Lazarus, come out!” Something amazing happened: Lazarus came out of the tomb, still wrapped in linen cloths. He commanded: ‘Roll the stone away.’ Martha said: ‘But it has been four days! His body will smell.’ Still, they rolled the stone away, and Jesus prayed: ‘Father, thank you for hearing me. Jesus went to the tomb, where a large stone covered the entrance. ![]() When the crowd saw his tears, they said: ‘See how Jesus loved Lazarus.’ But some wondered: ‘Why didn’t he save his friend?’ What would Jesus do next? She said: ‘Lord, if you had been here, our brother would still be alive!’ Jesus saw how much she was suffering, and he also began to cry. She fell down at his feet, and she could not stop crying. Then Martha went to Mary and told her: ‘Jesus is here.’ Mary ran to Jesus, and the crowd followed. Do you believe this, Martha?’ She said: ‘I believe that he will rise in the resurrection.’ Jesus said to her: “I am the resurrection and the life.” She said: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus told her: ‘Your brother will live again. When Martha heard that Jesus had come, she rushed to meet him. Crowds of people had come to comfort Martha and Mary. When Jesus arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had already been buried for four days. ![]() Lazarus is sleeping, and I am going to wake him up.’ The apostles said: ‘If Lazarus is asleep, that will help him to get well.’ So Jesus told them clearly: ‘Lazarus has died.’ He waited for two more days and then said to his disciples: ‘Let’s go to Bethany. Please come quickly!’ But Jesus did not go right away. One day, while Jesus was on the other side of the Jordan, Mary and Martha sent him an urgent message: ‘Lazarus is very sick. They were Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. Jesus had three very close friends who lived in Bethany.
