The main point is that the HomeWorx unit CAN supply a voltage to a USB drive (see how I got fed up with keep on saying "flash stick" there?) but it doesn't necessarily want to - it's got better things to do with all that lovely current and wants to keep it all for itself - it gets a bit hot and bothered if it's asked to supply too many widgets with power. just remember to tell the PC to eject the USB flash stick before you pull it out (OK read any double entendre you want into that one.) Yup a powered USB hub would be a safe bet but if what you've got set up now has been working OK then why mess around with it? USB flash sticks/memory cards - unlike fish sticks - are designed to go in and out of things (much like well-oiled presidents and porn stars) many times without harming themselves. For the record (vinyl of course - not shellac) my first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 (marketed in the US as the "Timex2000" - Google it!) they do take a very long time to format and the breadcrumbs tend to clog up the USB port in the long run.)Īnd don't pull that "Old Geezer" routine with me jra, I'm only a couple of years behind you myself. Hey, well if you've had no problems using flash sticks so far - keep using them (just don't confuze them with fish sticks - although you'll find fish sticks are an excellent high capacity storage medium with a really fast response time. If I can not find the unit you mention, would I be safe using this USB hub I used to use many years ago, when the computer I had did not have enough USB ports on my computer, it plugs into a 110 volt receptacle, then it plugged into my computer to give me 4 more USB ports, I am sorry if I seem to be asking a lot of questions, but sometimes I do not fully understand what people are trying to explain to me as far as computer stuff, again thank you for helping I am not really that computer savvy old man, I am almost 70 yr. I really only need about 500 GB, but now a days they seem hard to find or are just as expensive as a 1 Tb hard drive. It sounds to me, like I should not use a hard drive, that not only draws the recorded material but any other power from the HomeWorx. Hi thank you for looking at my question and replying, I have not had any problems using flash sticks to record on from my HomeWorx unit, just afraid since I have to remove it from my homeWorx and plug into my computer so many times, afraid down the road my start having problems. These days 500Gb external HDDs can be picked up quite cheaply. If you can't find a NexStar.3 500Gb external HDD at your local thrift store then try looking on Amazon, or suchlike. I eventually struck lucky when I picked up a NexStar.3 500Gb external HDD (Hard Disc Drive) from my local thrift shop for $9 (see I said I was lucky!) All I had to do was plug it into the mains supply and use a USB cable to connect it to the HomeWorx unit and it worked seamlessly right from the get-go.ĥ00Gb of recording space is much more than I actually need but it gives me tons of wiggle room if I want to record 20+ hours of TV. I can empathize with you on this subject I went through the whole gamut of trying various sizes of USB flash sticks (32, 64 and finally 64Gb) with unsatisfactory results. An external 3.5" disc drive is the same kind of hard disc that is inside your PC except that it is housed in a box (enclosure) that has its own power supply built-in and connects to a device (PC/PVR etc) via a USB connector cable. Yup, attaching an external hard drive is indeed the most convenient combination for smooth recording/retrieval and replaying media recorded from your HW180STB.
